Mark it down as an incomplete pass from Jesse to Jessica: The "Bachelor" couple has broken up.

Yeah, we know. Big surprise there.

NFL quarterback Jesse Palmer and law student Jessica Bowlin become the latest rose-besotted pair from the ABC dating show to fall by the wayside within a few months after the show wraps. "The Bachelor" is now 0-for-5 in creating lasting relationships, a record approaching 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers-like levels of futility.

Both "Bachelorette" couples -- Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter and Meredith Phillips and Ian McKee -- are still together, as far as anyone knows, which probably says something about the way men and women approach relationships, although we're not sure what.

"Jessica and I shared an incredible romantic journey on the show that began with a friendship that remains strong today," Palmer tells the syndicated entertainment-news show "Extra." "We simply realized that, individually, our next steps take us in different directions."

Bowlin notes that the show did not present "ideal circumstances in which to start a relationship," which the 10 million people or so who watch it every week already knew.

Palmer says he'll now devote his time to keeping his roster spot with the New York Giants, while Bowlin will head back to law school.
